Scratch

Mr. Fraas came in on Friday and helped the kids create their own game.  This can be daunting for some of the kids who are not familiar with coding, but he assured them that they can’t break it.  The more they play around with it, the more they will understand how it works.    I know some of the kids would like to join our class account to save their work.  I sent out an email yesterday with the our class link.  Please let me know if you didn’t receive it.  We look forward to seeing what the kids have been creating!

ZEARN

I have given each of the students their sign in and password for Zearn.   Remember, students either need to complete 1 lesson or 20 minutes on Zearn per week.  They will record their time on their reading log.  The class code for Zearn is XK7B4V.  You will need this code the first time your child signs on.

SPELLING/VOCABULARY

This past week’s test, students needed to identify the meaning of each of the root words.  Some of them had said they didn’t study the roots.  I told them they should know what each root word means so they can identify what any word means because they are familiar with that root. That is the purpose of our spelling/vocab, not just memorizing the 10 words given.  🙂  I have added the root word and their meaning to Quizlet so each student can study that as well.

Unit 4:

Root Word:    cycl (circle) Greek, circ/circum (around) Latin, centr/center (middle) Greek

Word list:

cycle, cyclical, cyclone, circumference, circuit, circumstance, circumvent, central, concentric, eccentric

Quizlet link:  I showed the students how to use Quizlet to study for spelling and vocab.  You will need to sign your child up if they don’t have an account already. 🙂

ACADEMIC NEWS

We began opinion writing this week.  We talked about what a good opinion paper includes and how it gives the writer’s view on a topic.  We will continue opinion writing this week.  The part of speech we focused on this week was adjectives.  Your child should be able to tell you what an adjective is and use and identify them in a sentence.  In math, we wrapped up Module 1 and started Module 2.   In Module 1, we focused on place-value, rounding, adding and subtracting using the standard algorithm and solving multi-step word problems using tape diagrams.  This week we will wrap up Module 2 where we will focus on expressing metric length measurements in terms of a smaller unit.  Model  and solve addition and subtraction word problems involving metric length.   In Idaho History, we wrapped up Geography of Idaho (we will finish the test on Tuesday) and will begin Native American Tribes of Idaho this next week.  Busy, Busy!  🙂
