Parent Teacher Conferences

On Monday, there will be a Sign Up Genius for Parent/Teacher Conferences.  I will start conferences on Monday, October 21st after school.  My oldest daughter’s volleyball team may be playing in the District Tournament on the 24th.  That is why I don’t have any time slots during the evening times.  We won’t know what time she plays until after Thursday of this week.  If you don’t find a time that works for you, please let me know and we will find another time for you.  I look forward to meeting with each of you!  🙂

ZEARN

I have given each of the students their sign in and password for Zearn.   Remember, students either need to complete 1 lesson or 20 minutes on Zearn per week.  They will record their time on their reading log.  The class code for Zearn is XK7B4V.  You will need this code the first time your child signs on.

SPELLING/VOCABULARY

This past week’s test, students needed to identify the meaning of each of the root words.  Some of them had said they didn’t study the roots.  I told them they should know what each root word means so they can identify what any word means because they are familiar with that root. That is the purpose of our spelling/vocab, not just memorizing the 10 words given.  🙂  I have added the root word and their meaning to Quizlet so each student can study that as well.
Unit 5:

Root Word:    dict- say, declare (Latin)  scrib/script- write (Latin)  graph/gram- write, draw, describe, record (Greek)

Word list:

dictate, contradict, edict, autobiography, telegram, calligraphy, graphic, inscription, transcript, prescription

ACADEMIC NEWS

This week, we continued practicing Opinion Writing.  The kids learned the double stuff OREO method (opinion, reason, explain, reason, explain, opinion).  I think the Double Stuff Oreo really helped them remember this writing tool.  🙂  Students will write their very own opinion paper next week.  In math, we wrapped up our module on the Metric System.  We will continue to touch on this throughout the year because even though it is not a priority standard in 4th grade, it is in 5th.  In Idaho History, we worked on our wooden Idaho and continued learning about the first people in Idaho, their culture, traditions and government.  A BIG Thank you to our Art Smart parents who came in on Friday!  The kids had a blast and can’t wait until the next lesson.

NEXT WEEK’S ACADEMIC NEWS
